With a nod from Roberto Cavalli and music that blends “French house vibes and DFA disco touches”, French electronic duo Acid Washed are becoming the poster boys for European chic in both the music and fashion worlds. With friends in high places and requests to play live for prominent fashion houses, it would seem as if ‘European chic’ goes without saying.

“We are swimming in a fashion world,” coos Andrew Claristidge, one half of the DJ duo. “It is almost impossible to imagine fashion without music and vice-versa.”

This rings true; Acid Washed’s music has not only been used by designers Roberto Cavalli and Gaspard Yurkievich, but a live set was also requested by close friend agnes b and designer Jenny Packham for London Fashion Week. This is impressive, but the most noteworthy collaboration is with British artist Anthony Burrill.

“Marc from Record Makers [Acid Washed’s Parisian label] introduced us,” Andrew explains. “Marc has a great ability to see through the music in terms of art direction,” fellow DJ Richard D’Alpert adds.

The art direction Richard is referring to is the collection of live, still and geometric animated visuals Burrill has created that are now so deeply intertwined with Acid Washed that it could be argued that he should be an honorary member.

“Anthony’s visuals and our music are like an ensemble. They are really complementary. When I saw his visuals I knew that it was exactly what we needed.”

It’s easy to see why. The beauty of animation is that you can build it around the music. Electronic disco music is one of the few genres where the presence of brightly coloured geometric shapes doesn’t strike the viewer as either odd or childish. Burrill’s visuals not only make 1970s curtains look positively dull, but they also make you want to dust off the Spirograph and get doodling.

So can we expect more from the über-collaboration that is the Acid Washed-Burrill team?

“We are in permanent contact with Anthony and he follows everything that we do. Our live show is getting bigger, surprises are coming soon.” Andrew says.

Irritating as this answer may be, you’ve got to admire the secrecy of the operation. When the hype surrounding an artist grows and specific attention is paid to the visual elements of the live show, spoilers are not an option.

In working with Burrill and Packham, Acid Washed are blurring the lines between music and fashion. With a line of Burrill-designed t-shirts under their belt and after supplying the soundtrack for some of the biggest shows in fashion, it’s easy to lose track of where the music ends and the fashion begins; particularly when their three-part collaboration worked so well.

“When people have common backgrounds, things turn out very smoothly,” Richard explains. “The whole thing was a pretty tight collaboration; all of us had the same instincts and the same precise ideas about how to work it out. It was a great team effort.”

“Jenny was sending us the drawings for her collection and Anthony sent us the stage design he made. Then we could imagine the music we would play live during the show.” Andrew adds.

Given the similarity of their work across the board, it certainly made the collaboration easier. Packham’s designs are bold, bright and futuristic, but carry that comforting, familiar and retro edge that many artists and designers require in order to make their work accessible. This is precisely the quality that both Burrill and Acid Washed have within their work too.

Describing their sound as “hypnotic, cinematic, disco and French, definitely French,” Acid Washed make music as refreshing as it is reflective. Adamant that their music “won’t have limits”, it seems fair to say that given their connections in the art and fashion worlds, their live shows will also know no limits.

Quite possibly the hardest working woman in radio, Mary Anne Hobbs has just got back from a gig in Moscow when I speak to her, and she’s still pretty hyped about it. “I’ve never played in Moscow before, and you tend to find in Eastern Europe the reception you get is absolutely phenomenal.”

“I think it’s officially the coldest place I’ve ever been, it got down to minus 22, which is really pretty extraordinary, it’s kind of one of those things where when you inhale, your lungs feel as if they’re about to explode because the air’s so cold.”

It’s not just the cold the Radio One DJ has to deal with, it’s also 31 hour round plane trips, sleep deprivation, and a horrendous eye infection.

“My job description should be sustained endurance test!” She laughs, but is quick to add “I wouldn’t exchange it for anything, it’s such a privilege to be in a position when you can be an evangelist for the music that you love.”

The passion Mary Anne has for music, in all forms, is hard to miss. Since her formative days working for Sounds and the NME, her dedication to the sonic arts has been unwavering. She describes it as an obsession, and it’s an obsession that is mirrored by her fans, who trust her to deliver the freshest beats. All across the globe, the fans are there, packing out the clubs to hear her drop the latest sounds she’s discovered.

“The clubs are always full and people are so excited to hear the sound that you’re bringing,” Mary Anne says. Best known as the DJ responsible for bringing Dubstep to a massive global audience, she is, as she puts it, “possessed by this mission to create the finest electronic music show on earth”. That mission is far from over she spends at least ten hours a day on SoundCloud and scours Facebook and MySpace to find more new music.

“I’m always reaching out to try to find new artists every week, I mean that’s the mission for the show really,” she explains, “to constantly progress, to constantly move forward. To find the new producers who are working right at the fringes of sound every week.”

So, from the woman who knows, what’s going to be the next big thing in electronic music? “Funky is going to do well in the next 12 months, it’s really bubbling at pirate station level. And Joy Orbison – I have to mention him, he’s been blowing minds and breaking hearts all over the place. I also heard Flying Lotus’ new album at his place and I was speechless listening to it, it’s going to change the face of electronic music for all time!”

Mary will be Playing at the Hare & Hounds, Kingsheath, Birmingham on April 9th with Hudson Mohawke.

Mary Anne Hobbs Experiment Show, Thursdays 2am-4am on BBC radio 1

Liz MacArthur

It’s a matter of opinion how cool DJs look with their mixing decks, headphones and time controlling fingers pushing buttons and switches, but there’s now a whole new question to be posed if they get their hands on a Tonium Pacemaker. It’s been coming for years, with gadget and DJ magazines holding their breath for this literally revolutionary piece of DJing equipment. As DJ Richie Hawtin said, “This will be to dance music what guitars were to rock n roll.”

So what is it exactly? Taking the best of an ipod-the ease in which to access 15,000 songs, and the tools of a mixing deck-the cue point settings, the EQ stabilising, the beatmatching, the recording and mixing capability, they are combined into 6×2x0.8 inches of black machinery that obliterates the reliance on standing at a deck all night getting back ache from crouching over. For amateurs and professionals alike, this is the kind of gadget that the smartest will get first, and the trailers will soon realise they need to have.

Resembling a mini mixing deck, the two circular areas each have a different function. The top one being the screen so you know what’s going on, and the bottom touchpad allowing you to determine what to do. As their website says, you are *only limited by your own imagination.” Meaning this is not a machine you can blame for your poor skills should you mess up and get away with it. With up to 15 hours of play time, and 5 of mixing time, the award winning product means you can DJ anywhere, anytime and for any circumstance.

Retailing at £369, here at Fused we’re giving you the opportunity to win one and realise your Pete Tong dream. Email your answer, name, age, date of birth and address to competitions@fusedmagazine.com by 12 noon on the 14th August 2009.
