Lily Allen Live at Wolverhampton Civic Hall 7th March 2007 by Cherry Barrett

It's difficult to predict who might venture out on a cold Wednesday night to watch the infamous Lily Allen. Tweens, Sassy girls, Rockport clad guys, All*Star students and the odd old Rocker made up the crowd at Wolverhampton’s Civic Hall. But despite the mixed bag of music lovers she drew out there was an excited and sociable atmosphere in the old hall all waiting to hear Lily's blend of pop/ska she has become loved for.

When she came on stage to Drum and Bass she was greeted with screams rather than foot stamping roars. In a pretty white dress and chunky white trainers Lily launched into LDN to the crowds delight. I was eager to see how her almost angelic voice would carry over her huge band and vocal followers… As she moved her way around the stage singing her heart out all I could hear were the enthusiastic Allenites singing her lyrics back to her drowning her out.

As her voice and lyrics suggest, her live performance is a blend of sweet and sour. Her birdlike song is cut up with an uncompromising bad attitude. She introduced Everything's Just Wonderful with "This is all about saying F**k you to the man" then dedicated it to mortgage lenders, teachers, Prime Ministers and Presidents of the United States. Not Big was preceded by "This song’s about guys with small d***s… I can tell you girls, I've seen a few in my time" I couldn’t help but cringe for the mom's that had brought their pre teen daughters along. Despite her feisty rep Lily Allen was sweet and comfortable on stage, effortlessly involving the crowd, although she also made an effort to keep up her bad girl image, getting roadies to bring her cigarettes to the stage and asking the crowd “what day is it anyway?”. But the crowd loved it and jumped, sang and cursed along with her.

Lily gave her audience a peek into what floats her bad girl boat with three awesome covers. She completely nailed Blondie’s Heart of Glass, which showcased perfectly her crisp saccharine voice, her encore included the Kaiser Chiefs Oh My God (totally thrilling the crowd) and finally she covered The Specials Blank Expression professing their influence over her and her music.

She delivered exactly what was expected of her and every face leaving the Civy was wearing a smile.
