Kathleen Edwards @ Manchester Academy 3 – 25th June 2008

I’m torn. If I tell you just how good Kathleen Edwards really is then I’ll be helping to make her the hugely popular artist she should quite rightly be, but the selfish part of me likes the fact that I can watch her perform to a crowd of around 100 people in a small room in the Student Union in Manchester. Watching such a phenomenal singer/songwriter in such an intimate setting is a real privilege and one I’d surely miss were Miss Edwards to play the venues she deserves to play.

Touring in support of her 3rd album, Asking For Flowers, Kathleen Edwards’ sound is, in many ways, very familiar while seeming completely unique at the same time. She’s been lumped in with the term “Americana”, a word that conjures up images of great songwriters like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Tom Petty as well as more recent names such as Ryan Adams and Gillian Welch. Edwards’ music can happily sit alongside such musical legends while bringing a whole new sound of her own to the table.

Rolling Stone magazine described her as “Bravado and beauty… an unavoidable presence” while Blender remarked that Edwards’ songs possessed "an indefinable pull that makes you love the characters they describe, no matter how fucked up they are." Her music ranges from melancholic tales of heartache and disappointments to pissed off rockers about shopping boyfriends to the cops. Listening to her stories makes you want to buy her a beer and find out more about the woman behind the music.

Tonight in Manchester we’re treated to a lengthy set straddling all 3 of her albums as well as a sublime cover of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” which Kathleen makes very much her own. She admits to being a little “croaky” and struggles to hit some of the higher notes, especially on I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory, but she battles on and her charming personality has everybody completely on her side. The stark and beautiful Scared At Night, a song about childhood memories and the death of her grandmother, has everyone transfixed and the unreleased I Can’t Give You Up is a welcome surprise to the set.

Throughout the performance Edwards is thoroughly involved in every moment of every song and it’s clear she loves playing to an appreciative audience. The epic Goodnight, California allows the rest of her band to show off their talents before the storming Oh Canada picks things up a notch or six.

Everybody in this room knows they are witnessing something special and all would agree it’s criminal that Edwards is not more widely recognized. Personally I can say without any exaggeration that Kathleen Edwards is one of the best singer/songwriters of our generation and certainly the most underrated. But do me a favour – keep it to yourself!
