Kathleen Edwards @ Manchester Academy 3 – 25th June 2008
I’m torn. If I tell you just how good Kathleen Edwards really is then I’ll be helping to make her the hugely popular artist she should quite rightly be, but the selfish part of me likes the fact that I can watch her perform to a crowd of around 100 people in a small room in the Student Union in Manchester. Watching such a phenomenal singer/songwriter in such an intimate setting is a real privilege and one I’d surely miss were Miss Edwards to play the venues she deserves to play.
Touring in support of her 3rd album, Asking For Flowers, Kathleen Edwards’ sound is, in many ways, very familiar while seeming completely unique at the same time. She’s been lumped in with the term “Americana”, a word that conjures up images of great songwriters like Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Tom Petty as well as more recent names such as Ryan Adams and Gillian Welch. Edwards’ music can happily sit alongside such musical legends while bringing a whole new sound of her own to the table.
