On Wednesday the 23rd November the first session gig took place at the Boiler Room. DJ Mylz from Heducation kicked off the night with a selection of great hip-hop tunes to get the party started.
Heducation’s musical back-grounds range from hip-hop to funk to reggae to drum & bass to house to rock, with many other elements in between, the focus of the Heducation is the culture surrounding conscience hip-hop... it's NOT about 50Cent, NOT about Westwood, NOT about how big you're rims are, how much ice you're wearing, or how many hoes you've got. It's about creative expression through music (DJ'ing,MC'ing,), through dance (b-boying, capoeira, street-dance) and through art (graffiti/aerosol art, glass painting)..
The Phantom Limb Phenomenon MC's took to the stage with a blast of energy that got everyone up off their seats. Even the crowd joined in with a select few grabbing the mic and giving it a go.
Next up was The Whitmo'deans whose use of old-school soul guitar, funky bass licks, chirpy organ chops, driven hip hop beats and honey soaked vocals got people moving on the dancefloor.
There was no time to get bored with this 9 piece as they incorporate a broad cross section of styles, from Sugar Hill Gang hip-hop to Primal Scream licks, with a bit of their own bluesy funk improv thrown in.
