Deluka are an electro/rock four piece from Moseley who have have a strong and unique sound, which comes together in an amalgamation of sleazy guitar riffs, throbbing bass, heavy beats and razor-sharp synths topped by amazingly powerful yet blissful vocals thanks to lead singer Ellie.
What makes you different and unique?
Kris: I don’t know if it makes us that different, but having Ellie as front woman definitely puts us in the minority, there are a lot of front men out there, put it that way. Also having the benefit of being a studio-derived band helps us define our live sound more than other bands I guess.
What has been your favourite gig?
Steve: Supporting ‘Test Icicles’ at the Birmingham Barfly was pretty amazing, definitely the largest gig we’ve played this year.
Who or what is your biggest influence and why?
Ellie: Each other, when we are in a creative mode. There’s nothing better than fuelling each other’s ideas and getting a great result at the end of it.
Steve: Chateauneuf du Pape.
Kris: I don’t know, maybe as I’m more responsible for creating our sound in the studio, I find myself listening more to how other records are produced, which may influence how I produce our stuff, but I can’t pin it down to one overall influence.
Dan: Mainly the artists I was listening to when I was learning to play, people like Keith Richards, Mick Ronson and David Bowie.
How would you describe yourselves on a blind date form?
Dan: Mean and Moody
Steve: Fuelled
Kris: Tall Dark and Handcuffed?
What's the best thing ever from Birmingham?
Kris: I think the best thing ever from Birmingham is the underground music scene right now. There are some really great bands emerging at the moment and people are interested in seeing live music again.
What are the advantages and disadvantages about being based in the Midlands?
Dan: Disadvantages: Whenever you go down south you’re called a ‘Cloth-capped Northerner’ and if you go up north you’re called a ‘Shandy-Drinking southern lightweight’.
Advantages: Again on a ‘north and south’ vibe, we get then best of both musical influences being in the middle. That’s probably why Birmingham has such a wide variety of bands and scenes.
