For those of you who don’t know the legacy of the Predator movies read on!

PREDATOR:

1985-1987 – The Original
When Jim and John Thomas created PREDATOR in 1987 – their first produced screenplay – they drew inspiration from a joke that was doing the rounds in Hollywood. The joke went that after four ROCKY films, since Sylvester Stallone’s character Rocky Balboa had run out of opponents on Earth, he’d need to fight an alien if a fifth film were to be made. Obviously the script they wrote sensibly didn’t attempt to set itself in the ROCKY universe, and as a result was released as an original franchise. It introduced the world to the Predator and grossed nearly $100m at the worldwide box-office. 23 years later, the PREDATOR franchise is one of the most beloved sci-fi properties in the world, spawning sequels, crossovers, comic books and videogames.

1987-1990 – The Sequel
After PREDATOR made nearly $100m at the worldwide box office from a production budget of just $15m, there was little doubt in anyone’s mind that a sequel would be on the cards. Creators Jim and John Thomas set about crafting a script for the sequel which would move the action to near-future LA and cast Danny Glover as a grizzled LAPD detective who finds himself in the middle of the Predator’s latest hunting ground. PREDATOR 2 was released in 1990 and in its final scenes suggested a third film, a prequel, which would take place in the 18th Century, when human weaponry was unsophisticated and the fight with the Predators that much harder. This film never materialised.

1987-Present – The Videogames
Since the earliest days of videogaming, PREDATOR has spun off into the interactive medium. An adaptation of the original film for consoles including the NES and the Amiga was the first. But videogames soon found their own feet, and a 1993 adaptation of ALIEN VS PREDATOR for the SNES solidified that crossover in pop culture history. In fact, the two franchises have walked hand in hand on consoles ever since, with the most recent release – this year’s ALIENS VS PREDATOR for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 – garnering positive reviews and becoming the fastest selling videogame of 2010 in the UK.

1989-Present – The Comic Books & Novels
While there were novelisations released of the films, it was standalone novels and comic books which established a world for the Predator far beyond the imaginings and scope of the movies. Through them we learned about the Predators’ home world and got more of an insight into the rules of their unusual hunt. We learnt about their religion and found out how they’d handle encounters on different kinds of terrain with vastly different opponents.

1992-Present – The Crossovers
By far the most indelible mark made by the comic books was a crossover with the ALIEN franchise, which provided fertile material for a string of comic book stories as well as two feature films. Inspired by a shot of an Alien skull in the trophy room of the Predator ship in PREDATOR 2, the comic books postulated what would happen when these two terrifying foes faced off against one another, with humans caught in the middle. And the franchise crossed over with others too – in comic books Predators have fought the Terminator, Superman, Batman, Judge Dredd and Tarzan. It was even suggested via another trophy room, glimpsed in one of the AVP comics, that the Predator had successfully hunted Wolverine and Cyclops from X-MEN, too.

2009-Present – The Reboot
But with this dilution of the core values of the PREDATOR franchise comes the need to start afresh, and so producer Robert Rodriguez set about breathing new life into the property with PREDATORS. Based on a script for a third film he’d been commissioned to write in the mid-90s, but adapted for audiences of today, PREDATORS is an action thrill ride that returns the franchise to its roots. A new group of unlikely heroes find themselves in the worst kind of hell imaginable when they’re captured by Predators and released on a jungle planet, which acts as a game reserve for the hunt-friendly big lizards.
