Fashion: ZIP ME UP BEFORE YOU GO-GO

An ordinary closure becomes the latest designer decorative muse. So you may usually be on the defensive when told to to zip it – but this summer, it’s a style directive you’ll definitely want to follow. Yes, it’s time to put a zip in it and channel Siouxsie Sioux circa 1977. Zippers are popping up in some pretty unexpected places, and the effect is a tough-chic look almost anyone looks good in. Who’d have though that the humble fastening could this much of a stir?

Music: The Hold Steady/Joe Gideon & The Shark – Cambridge Junction

Is there anything better than a road trip? Yes, a road trip that ends with seeing the Hold Steady play in a fairly small venue. Arriving in Cambridge on a baking hot day makes it impossible to be a in a bad mood. The old building, the bikes the sparkling river Cam and the super exciting news that Joe Gideon and the Shark are tonight’s support make it even better. If you’re not familiar with Joe Gideon then hurry up and get on board! Joe plays guitar and sings whilst sister Viva (aka the Shark) plays drums/loops/anything she can hit. A lazy comparison would be the White Stripes.  Other than the aesthetics of the stage set up, the similarities end there. Sounding like a psychedelic trip with Nick Cave in 50’s Cadillac while mad uncle Mark E Smith narrates from the back seat. Tonight they take the audience on a perplexing ride through Joe’s warped mind, which at first baffles the swelling crowd. By the end of the set the cheers and whoops are a sure sign of a new batch of Joe fans.
